'A' is for April

...and the first asparagus of the year!

Two little spears emerged a couple of weeks ago and after last week's mild, damp weather we noticed more little snouts pushing out of the ground. Yesterday I counted 17.  It does seem very early to be harvesting new season's asparagus doesn't it? But hey! why not?
Of course these were the only two of a size to eat. The Glam Ass was sent down the garden with his demon asparagus knife to harvest them. He's a hunter-gatherer at heart.....

The previous day he had been fishing - for trout on Lake Clywedog - bringing home 2 beautiful fish. One for now and one for the freezer.

Our meal last night was trout and Hollandaise - a brilliant yellow from the yolks of eggs laid by our own hardworking hens - with the added bonus of a spear of asparagus each to dip into the sauce as well.

Excellent.

I adore asparagus!

And so much better when you're eating your own produce. I've never done Asparagus but have thought about it and really SHOULD do it having read this.

Ps -
Just been reading about the planned pylons in yesterdays Times - quite monstrous!

I'm sure that I'll find nothing poking up in our asparagus bed, but soon, perhaps.

well that's a bit exciting. Hadn't even thought to look yet. Have a dismal little cot (bed is too grand a word) - at the last house but one had a great one but had to move just as it got going. Am going to go and stare hopefully and see if anything there. And then go to Waitrose and buy some :(

Matthew Rice whose calendars are always in our kitchen, urges me to plant an asparagus bed this year. I would gladly do so, but where? Unless I did up the lawn in a kind of 'dig for victory' offering. But I know it wouldn't work, I'd be short of a lawn and wouldn't get any asparagus for three years. I don't think the family would buy that. Not when asparagus comes easily from the greengrocer.
