Once in a blue moon - another well known phrase or saying.

We stood for quite a while last evening watching the moon rise. She shed her veil of cloud and hung on the horizon, golden, huge and low - bidding us to stay awhile and drink in her fullness perhaps. We watched her imperceptible climb into the darkening sky, beguiled enough to forget the biting cold that gnawed at our foolishly ungloved fingers. I wish I could admit to saying something more intelligent and articulate than 'Wow! Amazing'.

This blue moon isn't blue at all. A second full moon in a month is a comparatively rare occurence - hence 'once in a blue moon' to describe an unusual event. A little later in the evening we will see the shadow of a partial eclipse across its silvery face too. A very special moon indeed for New Year's Eve.
With all best wishes for 2010 from the small mountain kingdom of Trelystan - and if you have been, thanks for reading.

We have had 3 years of blue moons hence I am told all the weather being at odds, it is said to tire the moon and the earth but alos said to herald a good summer this year! Well that is what the Bretons tell me!

Gorgeous photos - I wanted to jump right into them. You certainly live in a beautiful part of the earth.
The moon has been spooky-looking here as we've had foggy nights and no really clear view of the sky.

Happy New Year to you. Here the moon looked enormous rising out of the sea.

And a happy New Year from me! That same moon hung in the blue sky early this morning over a snow clad Cowbridge and very beautiful it looked too.

The Latin expression for 'once in a blue moon' is apparently 'when a mule foals' which they do, apparently, once in a blue moon!

We watched it too, under the same moon up here. I love your photo with the hares. I don't know why I didn't think to try a photo - too busy just being amazed I suppose!
Happy New year to you and yours. Look forward to meeting up before winter ends.

That's funny, I've just blogged about this very topic using those exact words! Appropriately summed up the moment I reckon!

We watched it too but you described it beautifully.

Have finally got the chance, now that our visitors have gone, to send you all best wishes for 2010.
