In the lanes the snow is glistenin' etc

What a fantastic day it has been up here - if you like snow that is. Snowfall in the night has added to that which already covered the fields and a brisk wind has crafted drifts into fantastic swirling sculptural shapes. Unfortunately these block the lane. No matter that the snowplough came by first thing or that John came to the stock on a mighty tractor shortly afterwards - the way is closed again now.
It seemed a particularly good excuse to wear my New Christmas Hat. I must say it is everything a girl could want from a hat - thanks to son D for this most excellent present. How like an extra from a Welsh production of Dr Zhivago I look standing in the lane amongst the snowy hills. Perhaps a Troika would be a good idea to haul me through the lanes - although a tractor might be better.

Tonight though we'll go nowhere. We'll hunker down in splendid isolation and draw on our own resources in a quiet white world.

Pictures below from yesterday - a landscape distilled to black and white and shades between. Click to get a better look. Less is more methinks.

Our first winter on the mountain, and we are amazed by the amount of snow and the drifts that have formed. Took our new puppy out today in the sunshine, she disappeared a couple of times in the snow mounds! Enjoyed your beautiful pictures, we too have taken many over the last few days! Could do with your hat, the wind does nip at the ears!!

I've got a new hat as well! Blocked over here as well - never got out to work today - was looking at your side all bathed in pink earlier - so pretty

Marvellous snow pictures and I absolutely love your new hat! Perhaps I should replace the ancient beanie with a springbok on it (why? the answer is lost in the mists of time but is something to do with older son) with something so stunningly stylish.
We aren't going anywhere much tonight either.

Gorgeous pictures and it was so nice to see you in your new hat. I bet the dogs love chasing snowballs - I know mine does!

I love those snow drift pictures. I haven't been down the lanes, I doubt that I could get that far.

Don't think i've ever the Hills look as beautiful in all the 12 years we've been here.

Not going anywhere either.

Great landscape photos of the winter patchwork quilt. The upper one has a lovely abstract quality to it due to the brightest part being in the middle and not overpowering the linear pattern of the roads and hedges. Always enjoy your blog posts!

Wow those pics are really wonderful. Doesn't nature sculpture some amazing patterns? Thanks for sharing cos our's is nowhere near as spectacular.

You are really having a winter to remember. It's a good thing that you have that hat - perfect for the season and very attractive - are you sure you don't have a little Cossack in your blood?
I think that hunkering down for the duration is a very good idea.

Just stunning. Our lanes are filled with snow, and the braches are twinkling in the sunlight (or were, it's 9pm...), such an amazing time that's ruined by all the 'chaos on the roads' news bulletins..

What wonderful pics, I blew them all up and marvelled at the scenery (apart from the one of you in your hat of course) which incidentally is absolutely spendid.

How glorious it all looks. I'm a bit jealous. Typical that the winter I am not in Wales, it looks like that!
